One of E3 2015’s biggest announcements was that Shenmue would be making a return to the video game world with the release of Shenmue 3. As of now, the title is currently scheduled for release on PS4 and PC, but those with an Xbox One and Wii U are left wondering whether or not the title may one day grace their console of choice.
According to a report by Videogamer from June 16, the developers of Shenmue 3, Ys Net, have issued a comment about releasing the title on other platforms, such as the Xbox One and Wii U.
On the Shenmue III Kickstarter page, Ys Net has answered a number of frequently asked questions to provide fans with as much information as possible. One of the more popular questions being: will the game come to other platforms?
Well, the answer to this question is both good and bad. First the bad: currently Shenmue 3 development is planned only for PC (Windows) and PS4. As for the good, the development team admits that other platforms have not been decided yet, so there is still a chance that Shenmue 3 finds its way Xbox One and Wii U.
The original Shenmue was released for the Sega Dreamcast back in 2000. The game was met with critical praise and modest sales. A sequel was released on Dreamcast in Japan and Europe in 2001. Shenmue II was released in the US on the Xbox in 2003. Shenmue 3 will continue the story of Ryo Hazuki and his quest to find the man who murdered his father.
Neither Sega nor Ys Net have announced plans to release Shenmue or Shenmue II in an HD collection at this time. Hopefully a collection does happen so fans and newcomers can familiarize themselves with the game’s story, characters, and lore before the release of Shenmue 3, which is slated for Dec. 2017.
