This new console generation is no stranger to enhanced ports or re-releases of software that launched on last-gen consoles. For some, these repackaged games give forth a new opportunity to experience a definitive version of a last-gen hit. Overkill Software is bringing PAYDAY 2, which released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, to the PS4 and Xbox One on June 16 with the launch of PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition. But one question remains: is this a bank vault worth breaking into for a second time?
To put it simply: Yes. PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition is a unique gem that gamers should experience on their PS4 or Xbox One. Packed with eight DLC packs from the PC version, upgraded graphics, and smoother game performance, this is the best way to play PAYDAY 2 on home consoles. So get your lock picks, a few large duffle bags, and put on your mask, because it’s time to plan a heist.
Think back to the opening sequence of The Dark Knight where a group of robbers take control and rob a bank with ease. With one disabling the alarm system, others packed bags with money, and the remainder secured the main lobby for a quick escape. PAYDAY 2 allows you to do exactly this – minus the Joker. With the game purely focused on performing wild heists, you can recruit the assistance of up to four players to steal and rob your way into wealth.
What makes this game so captivating is the freedom and flexibility in which you can approach its missions. You may choose to case the location, and look for vulnerabilities in the security system by taking a stealth approach – though being successful with stealth is difficult. If slow and methodical isn’t your forte, you can don your mask, threaten hostages, and ransack the joint before the police and SWAT team arrive. Each style has its pro and cons, so it’s best to discuss the best course of action with your teammates.
Although performing a mission entirely in stealth is conceivable, it is very challenging and, most of the time, not worth the effort. With that said, we found that casing a location with stealth and using zip-ties on onlookers, gave us a fair amount of time to set up drills on safes, threaten bank or store patrons, and begin to loot the location. Those precious extra seconds will prove to be beneficial as the longer you’re on a heist, the more law enforcement will arrive on the scene.
Shootouts will frequently happen in PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition, but it’s best to go into them with a plan. Killing SWAT and police officers will keep them off your back for a short amount of time, but it’s challenging, if not impossible, to clear an entire area of law enforcement. We used a tactical defense – mainly shooting at cops who got close to our location. By splitting into squads, we could have one or two people continue to steal and crack safes; meanwhile two of us would cover their position and fend off incoming threats.
The shooting controls take some time to adjust to. They aren’t as smooth as, say, Call of Duty or other first-person shooters. Tinker with the sensitivity options and find a setting that best suits you. We found the default controls to be too stiff for our liking.
Team organization is a focal point in being successful. You will get frustrated, you will curse at your teammate for trying to be the Joker and dismantling dozens of policemen on their own, but you will retry a heist until you are successful. The game pushes you to be better, play smarter, and to learn from past mistakes. Additionally, you will level-up, pick up new skills, unlock new weapons, acquire better body armor, and new masks.
PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition can be played offline, with two AI teammates, but they aren’t very useful. They’ll shoot at officers, revive you if you are shot, but they won’t assist in thieving. To get the most out of the game, you need to play it online. The best way to experience this game is with a group of friends. Solo-play is good for getting acclimated to the controls and general game design, but online is when the fun begins.
If you are tired of the same old online shooters and looking for something new to play on your Xbox One or PS4, PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition is for you.
